VF is visionary fiction, a genre defined by novelist Jodine Turner in a Writer’s Journal article in 2009.  “The emphasis is on our limitless human potential, where transformation and evolution are entirely possible.” A VF work features:

• Growth of consciousness as the central theme
• Reincarnation, dreams, visions, paranormal events, and metaphysical plot devices
• Has a universal world view

In 2011, a Goodreads group expanded to become the Visionary Fiction Alliance. I joined the alliance last month after reading about it in a blog by Ellis Nelson, I Write Visionary Fiction Who Knew? that aptly described my feelings.

In The Article That Started It All, Turner described a vision she had in Glastonbury, England that led her to writing visionary fiction. Her experience reminded me of the first time I entered Rodia’s Towers in the Watts community of Los Angeles, California. Sabato Rodia was born in Italy in 1879. He immigrated to the United States and eventually settled in California and worked as a tile maker.

In 1921, he bought a triangular-shaped lot on 107^th Street in Los Angeles and began building the intricate tile bejeweled web of concrete towers. He worked alone for over 30 years, using simple tools and no scaffolding. He shaped steel girders, applied concrete, and stood on each completed web to build the towers higher and higher. The Towers are decorated with broken tile, dishes, pottery, shells, and glass. He called it Nuestro Pueblo, our town. His motivation was simple, “I had it in mind to do something big and I did it.”  Follows is a description of my first visit, I wrote years ago.

—– The first time I entered the Towers, I walked slowly from the stage entrance area and entered each tower, feeling such a profound serenity I did not want to leave. I gently touched the rough multi-textured surfaces, an architectural collage. I walked reverently, joyfully prolonging my visit, wishing I could stay there forever. I wanted to just die in the midst of this marvelous temple of creativity, spirituality, and love. The total presence of My Most Longed for Living Love descended upon me as I stood within its open walls. I became drunk with peace and ecstasy as a colorful vision flowed before my mind’s eye.

Tears rose as I a grand ritual unfolded before my eyes. I felt a strange pain but was not sad, I was overwhelmed by power emanating from each stone and broken piece of glass like a celestial symphony rising around me. After a few minutes, the tears stopped and I walked slowly back to the entrance. ——
