I’m reading a novel Some Sing, Some Cry at the moment – by Ntozake Shange and Ifa Bayeza. It covers a lot of this period – from the onset of Jim Crow through the Harlem renaissance. It focuses on one family with a particular talent for mercury. It really resonates with this history you describe. It’s a fabulous book. I love it.
